Professor Richard O’Brien is Director of the Lipid Service and a senior endocrinologist at Austin Health, Melbourne, Australia. He is Clinical Dean of the Austin Clinical School, University of Melbourne and Director of Graduate Programs and Executive Education for the Melbourne Medical School.
Professor O’Brien is currently President of the Asian Pacific Society of Atherosclerosis and Vascular Diseases and is a past president of the Australian Atherosclerosis Society. He is Victorian state representative on the Clinical Council of the Australian Atherosclerosis Society and leads the Australian Diabetes Society lipid guidelines committee.
After completing specialist training at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne, he undertook further studies in diabetic renal disease with Prof. George Jerums, completing a PhD entitled “Diabetic Nephropathy: Early Pathophysiology and Therapeutic Intervention”. Prof. O’Brien later moved to Monash Medical Centre where he spent 15 years as Head of Diabetes. His research work has focused mainly on diabetes, lipid abnormalities and vascular disease and he has authored numerous scientific papers on these subjects.
Professor O’Brien returned to the Austin Hospital in 2007 to take up his current position as Clinical Dean. He maintains an active research interest in atherosclerosis and diabetes, and is a passionate educator in these fields. In addition to his teaching and research commitments, Professor O’Brien maintains active clinical practice in Lipid Disorders, Endocrinology and Diabetes.
