From 1997 until June 2014, Dr Alonso worked at the Lipid Clinic, Internal Medicine Department at Fundación Jiménez Díaz, Madrid, Spain. He was co-founder of the Spanish Familial Hypercholesterolemia Foundation in 1998. From 2014 to February 2020, Dr Alonso worked as staff in the Department of Nutrition at Clínica Las Condes, Santiago de Chile, and was the Head of the Department from 2016 to January 2020. During this period, he started the local registry for patients with Familial Hypercholesterolemia. National Leader for the European Atherosclerosis Society FH Study Collaboration.
Currently, Dr Alonso actively collaborates with the Spanish Familial Hypercholesterolemia Foundation, in the SAFEHEART cohort, and is member of its Scientific Committee. Also, he is member of the board of the Iberoamerican Familial Hypercholesterolemia Network Association, and member at large of the International Atherosclerosis Society Board.
In 2016 was elected President of the Chilean Working Group on Atherosclerosis, recently formed as Corporation.
Current position: Co-Director and work as clinician in the Center for Advanced Metabolic Medicine and Nutrition in Santiago de Chile.
